Global Product Director of Performance Non-wood Bats - Louisville Slugger (Louisville, KY)

Position Summary:

As the Global Product Director of Performance Non-wood Bats, you will set the overall vision, direction and execution of three year line plan for non-wood bats.  In addition, this forward thinking position sets the overall branding and graphic vision for the three year line plan and incorporates known consumer needs and insights.  This position also oversees the strategy and execution of field testing. This vital role will help shape the experience of today’s and tomorrow’s players.

Essential Functions:

  • Partner with Director of Engineering to bring to market imaginative / creative / patentable / performance-enhancing innovations to bats, knobs and end caps on a yearly basis.
  • Identify / evaluate through marketplace intelligence promising areas of research and/or technology that addresses unmet needs that can improve the competitive position of the company.
  • Proactively seeks learning and innovative ideas outside of baseball/softball product categories.
  • Travels in marketplace with Sales Reps, retailers and players to listen, learn and present product line.
  • Develops strategic team to help determine bat line offering (retailers, reps, sales management, business managers and marketing.
  • Develops protocol for gathering marketplace intelligence / consumer insights and transfers knowledge to strategic team.
  • Partners with Fast Pitch, Baseball and Slow Pitch Business Managers to facilitate on field testing, player insights and line planning.
  • Works with R&D and third parties to execute vision for knobs, grips, end caps, graphics and connection technology.

·         Leads and provides guidance to R&D engineers in translating category strategy into objectives and ensures execution through implementation.

·         Develops third party relationships to bring about innovation in product and graphics.

·         Manages the development and execution of all bat cosmetics from idea generation to product launch.

  • Develops and executes optimal category line plan strategy, product assortment, top down forecasting, pricing, gross margin, revenue targets and ensures alignment with sales, marketing, R&D, Finance and Supply Chain.

·         Establishes category GMROI targets and tracks the performance against them.

  • Manages the line plan calendar with R&D and supply chain.
  • Creates a culture of collaboration with Suppliers, Sales, Marketing, Finance, and Supply Chain.
  • Oversees standardized testing program with Fast Pitch, Slow Pitch and Baseball players.

·         Partners with Supply Chain in the sourcing events for supplier evaluation, negotiation and selection.

  • Travels overseas to meet with factories and suppliers 2-3 times per year or on an as needed basis.

·         Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

Competencies Required For This Position:

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred for this position.
  • 7-10 years of performance product management preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills are required.
  • Experience working with baseball players, engineers and retailers.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • Strategic thinker with ability to clearly communicate ideas and concepts.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with other departments and individuals.
  • Former Baseball Player with a passion for the game preferred.
  • Intellectually curious.
